The second quarter of 2021 saw notable trends in the performance of the top 5 consumer finance apps in South Africa on the Android platform. Here’s a closer look at their weekly downloads and active user metrics, based on data from Sensor Tower.

Capitec Bank experienced a significant fluctuation in weekly downloads. Starting strong with 107K downloads at the end of March, downloads peaked at nearly 140K in mid-April. However, a downward trend followed, with the lowest point being around 29K in the first week of June, before a slight recovery to 34K at the end of June. Active users for Capitec Bank showed a steady increase, starting at 1.85M and reaching a peak of 2.14M by the end of June.

The FNB Banking App had relatively stable weekly downloads, averaging around 21K. There was a slight dip to 17.7K in late May, but the app ended the quarter with downloads back up to 21.3K. Active user trends showed a decrease from 1.62M at the end of March to 1.48M by mid-April, followed by a recovery to 1.59M by the end of June.

TymeBank maintained a consistent download range throughout the quarter, starting at 15.7K and peaking at 21.3K in the last week of June. Active users for TymeBank also demonstrated a positive trend, growing from 239K at the end of March to 280K by the end of June.

Nedbank Money saw weekly downloads start at 15.5K and peak at 20.1K in late May. However, the numbers fluctuated, with a low of 13.7K at the end of May and finishing the quarter at 15.3K. Active users showed a general upward trend, starting at 304K and reaching 329K by late June, despite some fluctuations.

Standard Bank / Stanbic Bank had weekly downloads ranging from 11.6K to 18.3K throughout the quarter. The highest downloads were observed in late May. Active users numbers fluctuated slightly, starting at 340K and reaching a peak of 367K by early June before ending the quarter at 351K.
